Have We Met Before? is a docudrama about how gay men have met over the ages. Focusing on different behaviours in different eras, from the hanky code in the 70s, cottaging and cruising in the 80s, to desktop websites in the 90s after the arrival of the internet, to mobile phone apps in present day. A chorus of voices lead our narrative as the verbatim stories of nine different men of various ages.
Working with the producer Syd Heather, we won a place on the BBC and BFI short film scheme, Born Digital. They wanted to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the internet, commissioning 11 emerging filmmakers to create a short film inspired by this topic. We made it into the final group from over 400 applications. The films were broadcast on BBC Four in Spring 2019 and were available on BBC iPlayer for a limited time in the UK alone. They premiered at the BFI Southbank.
